Aromasin (Exemestane) is a drug used to treat breast cancer. Exemestane is active ingredient of Aromasin and it’s a member of the class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors.
Some types of breast cancer require estrogen hormone to grow. Those type of cancers have estrogen receptors and are called ER-positive. Aromatase is an enzyme that synthesizes estrogen and aromatase inhibitors like Aromasin block the synthesis of estrogen. This lowers the estrogen level so the growing of cancer slows or stops.
Aromasin is used in addition to surgery and/or radiation in post-menopausal women. Oral Aromasin 25 mg/day for 2–3 years of adjuvant therapy is effective with early-stage estrogen receptor-positive/unknown receptor status breast cancer. Trial results show that adding Afinitor (everolimus) to Aromasin therapy against advanced breast cancer can significantly improve progression-free survival compared with exemestane therapy alone.

Before taking Aromasin, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: cholesterol, bone problems, stroke or blood clots, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems. This medication may make you dizzy, do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.
Call your doctor immediately if you have a serious side effect such as new or unusual bone pain, vision problems, swelling in your hands or feet, difficulty of breathing, chest pain, sudden numbness or weakness, sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech or balance.
